BNRC Clam River Lecture and Hike

September 17, 2016 @ 4:00 am - 1:00 pm

Join staff of the Berkshire Natural Resources Council for a tour of their Clam River Reserve.  Topics of discussion during the tour will include today’s plant and animal communities and the influence that Sandisfield’s human history has on the composition of those communities.  We will gather at the Arts Center for a brief talk augmented by historical photos of Sandisfield and items from BNRC’s “gory box”, a box of skulls, antlers, and other animal parts.  From the Arts Center, we will carpool to the start of the newly completed Clam River trail.  Highlights include a well preserved 18th century foundation, the beautiful hemlock-hardwood forest bordering the Clam River, the River itself, and the ruins of an 18th century mill.

Bring a sandwich and something to drink.  We can enjoy lunch on the trail or at the Arts Center when we get back.  The hike will take about 2 1/2 hours.  Length: 2.0 miles on hiking trail and road (terrain is variable (sometimes steep) but footing is very good).

NB:  Rain date October 15
