SUMMARY:Evening of Song Our Hit Parade (fundraiser) The Songs of Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne
DESCRIPTION:Come spend a very special evening immersed in the music of two of the most beloved song writers of all time.  Their music is timeless and has been sung by all the greats. Time magazine said Cahn & Styne were the country’s most successful songwriting team after Rodgers & Hammerstein. \nJule Styne is the versatile\, prolific songwriter whose tunes became standards for three generations and the composer of such classic Broadway musicals–Gypsy\, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes\, and Funny Girl.  He was a notorious collaborator\, which is why his name is less familiar than his music.  This was probably because of his consummate flexibility.  “You write as well as who you write with\,” he said\, and he usually let a musical’s lyricist and star set the tone for the score.   \nSammy Cahn is the burlesque violinist who grew up to write some of America’s favorite songs and win four Academy Awards for such tunes as “Three Coins in a Fountain” and “All the Way.” \nNow the voices of Mary Verdi\, Linda Mironti\, and Brian DeLorenzo\, with piano accompaniment by Joe Rose offer their interpretations of Cahn and Styne’s work. \n \nThis special evening includes an intermission with Prosecco and a resplendent dessert table. \nThis program is supported in part by a grant from the Sandisfield Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:CELEBRATING THE WORK OF NEIL SIMON
DESCRIPTION:The Sandisfield Players bring to the stage excerpts from The Odd Couple\, Brighton Beach Memoirs\, The Last of the Red Hot Lovers\, and other Neil Simon comedies.  The performances will be script-held.  The program is developed by Ben Luxon\, Charles Evers Whyte\, and Mary Anne Grammer. \n  \nNeil Simon\, 1927-2018 \nMost playwrights are lucky if they have one play that becomes a household name and a repertory staple. Mr. Simon had several; Barefoot in the Park\, The Odd Couple\, The Sunshine Boys\, California Suite\, and Brighton Beach Memoirs were just a selection of his many hits. He also succeeded with musicals\, collaborating on Little Me\, Sweet Charity\, Promises\, Promises\, and They’re Playing Our Song. \nNote: This is the only performance of this show — the November 10 Sunday matinee is canceled.

SUMMARY:Andy Holtzman — Opening Reception. Show runs through November 28
DESCRIPTION:Free opening reception Saturday\, November 2nd 2:00-4:00 PM. \nAfter the opening reception\, the show will run until November 28th\, and can be seen before performances or by appointment. Call 413-258-4100. \nArtist’s Statement: \nIf I have a definable photographic style\, it’s dedicated to capturing the diverse ways which natural light and saturated color play on any of my subjects. My eye is not particular to any specific subject matter. Anything and everything that’s in the way of my lens is fair game\, and they tend to pursue me! I still love printing on traditional fine art paper\, but more recently I have been experimenting with printing on stretched canvas\, metals\, hard resin coating and encaustic. \nAndy has logged over 25 years of executive leadership across a diverse marketing career\, incorporating brand strategy and creative management. \nPhotography is a lifelong hobby of his\, guided by a personal perspective on how we observe life around us.

SUMMARY:Val Coleman on "The Constitution Alive"
DESCRIPTION:Val Coleman will argue that the American constitution is alive and well\, despite the assaults on its tenets throughout the history of this country.  Val Coleman\, known as the poet laureate of Sandisfield\, is also a citizen-scholar. His previous presentations on the history of poetry\, the rise and persistence of fascism in the 20th century\, and Abraham Lincoln provided a long view on these subjects\, and encouraged a vigorous discussion with members of the audience.  This subject is sure to do the same. \nOur blog features several of Coleman’s previous talks.

SUMMARY:Today's Poets in Conversation with the Masters
DESCRIPTION:“A large number of the poems I most admire and which seem to be most original are talking back to other poets of other ages.”\n—Richard Wilbur \nJoin us for this unique poetry program with poems of masters such as Frost\, Auden\, Wilbur\, Plath\, Owen\, Boland\, Kumin\, Bynner\, and Yeats performed by Ben Luxon and Sandisfield Players Mary Anne Grammer\, Jean Atwater-Williams\, Tina Sotis\, Charles Fidlar\, and Val Coleman\, in dialog with poems they have inspired by award-winning poets Hilde Weisert\, Rebecca Hart Olander\, Jayne Benjulian\, Irene Willis\, and others. \nJames Kraft\, distinguished writer and general editor of the works of Witter Bynner and the biography Who Is Witter Bynner?\, will read several  of the most enduring Bynner poems\, including this one: \nDefeat \nOn a train in Texas German prisoners eat\nWith white American soldiers\, seat by seat\,\nWhile black American soldiers sit apart\,\nThe white men eating meat\, the black men heart.\nNow\, with that other war a century done\,\nNot the live North but the dead South has won\,\nNot yet a riven nation comes awake.\nWhom are we fighting this time\, for God’s sake?\nMark well the token of the separate seat.\nIt is again ourselves whom we defeat. \nWitter Bynner\, 1881-1968 \nBynner\, largely forgotten today\, was widely published and well-known in the early and mid-20th century. He was a champion of the women’s movement and racial equality and friend to Robert Frost\, D.H. and Frieda Lawrence\, Edna St. Vincent Millay\, and Khalil Gibran. His translations brought Chinese poetry to an American audience\, and his version of The Way of Life\, according to Lao-Tzu is still considered definitive. \nThe program will be followed by a wine and cheese reception. \nTickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. \nAbout the poets: \nJayne Benjulian is author of the critically-praised Five Sextillion Atoms. Jayne will teach a new workshop Writing and the Art of Revising at the Foundry in West Stockbridge Friday mornings nine to noon from October 18 – November 22. Information here. \nRebecca Hart Olander’s  debut full-length collection\, Uncertain Acrobats\, is forthcoming from CavanKerry Press in 2021. Rebecca teaches writing at Westfield State University and is editor/director of Perugia Press. \nHilde Weisert lives part-time in Sandisfield and is author of The Scheme of Things. SUMMARY:Fascism and Racial Laws in Mussolini's Italy
DESCRIPTION:In his talk and slide presentation\, historian and part-time Sandisfield resident Dr. Robert A. Maryks will tell a story of the impact of the racial laws on the Jews (and those who were considered Jews) under the Mussolini regime. This story is based on 139 letters that were exchanged between the victims of those laws (and their relatives and friends) and the Jesuit priest Pietro Tacchi Venturi (1861–1956) who interceded within the Fascist government in order to circumvent or alleviate various provisions of the 1938 anti-Jewish legislation. Maryks discovered these letters in a Roman archive and published them in a recent book.  \nRobert A. Maryks\, PhD (Fordham University) has published widely on the history of the Jesuits\, including\, most recently\, the edited volume Encounters between Jesuits and Protestants in Asia and the Americas (Brill\, 2018). He is the editor of the Journal of Jesuits Studies\, Brill’s series of Jesuit Studies\, Jesuit Historiography Online\, and Brill Research Perspectives in Jesuit Studies.

SUMMARY:Film: The Garden of the Finzi-Continis

A simply breathtaking film about a way of life now lost forever. Gorgeously restored and remastered in Dolby Stereo. \nWinner of 26 Major International Awards. “This is truly one of the great films of all time.” — Joel Siegel\, Good Morning America. \nThe run time is 1 hour 34 min. SUMMARY:Claudia D'Alessandro "The Nature of Things" — Opening Reception. Show runs through September 28
DESCRIPTION:Free opening reception Saturday\, September 7th 2:00-4:00 PM. \nAfter the opening reception\, the show will run until September 28\, and can be seen before performances or by appointment. Call 413-258-4100. \nArtist’s Statement: \nAll around us\, the natural world offers a distant mirror of our experiences:  in the sky and water and on the earth.  Great drama\, intricate patterns\, faces\, shapes\, and colors are all around\, and sometimes\, the most beautiful of these lasts only an instant. \nThe light\, patterns\, colors and shapes found in Nature’s palette of sweeping landscapes\, skies\, and waterways blend realism\, impressionism\, and abstractions. As part of my joy in living\, I transfer those images onto paper\, canvas\, and aluminum\, creating photographs that can ornament\, inspire — perhaps transform — our living spaces.

SUMMARY:Bill Cohn on "Combating the Enemy Within"
DESCRIPTION:Early in the Depression\, on February 2\, 1931\, Silas H. Strawn\, Chairman of the United States Chamber of Commerce\, warned\,  “in a condition of this kind\, the thing to be feared most is fear itself.” In March 1933 President-elect Franklin Delano Roosevelt echoed this same sentiment in his inaugural address when he told the American people “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”   \nEven before America’s entry into World War II and then during the war\, FDR discovered there was something to fear in the likely presence of fascist and communist foreign agents who were engaged in internal subversion\, among other things.   \nInternal dangers and combating the enemy within has a history dating back to the late nineteen century if not before\, reaching full maturity in the 20th and 21st centuries. \n  \nCohn is a retired college professor who taught history and American studies at Trinity College in Hartford\, CT\, and European history at Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh\, PA.

SUMMARY:Marguerite "Marge" Bride — Opening Reception\, Sat\, Aug 3rd
DESCRIPTION:Free opening reception Saturday\, August 3rd\, 2:00 – 4:00 PM. \nAfter the opening reception\, the show will run until August 28\, and can be seen before performances or by appointment. Call 413-258-4100. \nArtist’s Statement: \n“Wherever I go I cannot help but see the colors and scenes around me as a painting. Watercolor always provides a fun surprise … no matter how I may initially visualize the finished painting; the medium always tells me who is really the boss here. Often those little unplanned-for happenings are the most interesting part of the painting.  When that happens\, I just let the water do its thing. \n“Creating painterly architectural images is most intriguing for me. I enjoy painting the old buildings and the lovely town centers here in the Berkshires and New England\, and of course\, lighthouses and house portraits. I’ve waited many years before permitting myself to become immersed in art. The time spent in other professions has made this one all the more precious.” \nBride is a Berkshires resident and works out of her studio in Pittsfield\, where she also gives lessons and meets with clients. Visit her website (https://margebride-paintings.com) or Facebook page for updates on her exhibit schedule.

Berkshire Opera Festival co-founders Brian Garman and Jonathon Loy will answer all your questions through an interactive presentation on their summer 2019 production of the comic opera Don Pasquale\, which will be performed at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center.
