SUMMARY:Literary Launch featuring Antonia Lake and Hilde Weisert
DESCRIPTION:Join us for two literary launches—a new poetry book from Sandisfield poet Hilde Weisert and the new journal Stone Walls II\, with arts\, history and culture of the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts\, co-edited by Worthington’s poet Antonia Lake. \nWeisert will read from her first poetry collection\, The Scheme of Things. Lake and others will read prose and poetry selections from Stone Walls II\, this first issue features an exclusive joint interview with Cummington’s two national Poets Laureate\, William Jay Smith and Richard Wilbur\, as they describe their experiences in these small towns of Western Massachusetts. \nWeisert’s poems have appeared in the magazines Cincinnati Review\, Cortland Review\, Prairie Schooner\, Southern Poetry Review\, CALYX\, and Ms. She hosted last year’s Sandisfield Arts Center “Celebrating Animals” poetry reading\, and her poem “The Pity of It” won second prize in the Berkshire Festibal of Women Writers 2014 contest. \nHere’s What People Are Saying: \n“Hilde Weisert’s quiet\, versatile poetic voice\, fully at ease in narrative and lyric\, is distinguished by vivid accuracy of thought and speech\, modest but absolute courage in choice of subject\, a dry\, sweet humor\, and a generosity of spirit that brings me back to her book again and again.” \n– Ursula Le Guin \n“Worldly\, capacious\, melancholy\, as if old friends were on a walk together\, Hilde Weisert’s poems recall and respond to events from Paris to Hungary to Brooklyn. A daughter greets a father in an airport; a woman watches an octopus open a jar; a pianist chooses to play Russian music in America’s cold-war McCarthy era. This poet’s intelligent\, quizzical takes on human history (and folly) mix science with philosophy—and pulse to the beat of the American songbook\, too. Don’t miss “The Editor\,” a poem about writing itself\, or “The Payment” with its intimate\, yet angled view of daughters\, or “Away\,” where the poet lures her free-verse heart into a taut sonnet. Hilde Weisert’s sympathetic genius shines in The Scheme of Things.”\n– Molly Peacock \n“Hilde Weisert’s The Scheme of Things is a compelling and haunting book that explores the many layers of family\, friendship\, feminism\, art \,and the impact of the past on the present. Weisert’s powerful voice is at times wise\, wry\, worldly\, but always compassionate as she takes the reader on an odyssey that includes this country\, Paris\, and even Hungary\, but also the past. Weisert is the consummate poet when it comes to language.I can’t think of another poet whose language is so exquisite\, original \,and luminous.”\n– Laura Boss

SUMMARY:The Belle of Amherst performed by Mari Andrejco
DESCRIPTION:In The Belle of Amherst\, we journey with Emily Dickinson through her life. We explore her typical 19th c. girlhood and increasingly reclusive adulthood where words became her life\, and friends her “estate”. Through sharing letters\, books and poems she explores her truths with nature\, man and God. \nMari Andrejco is an actor\, teaching artist\, director and producer. She is a graduate of Temple University and The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater\, and has appeared on Public Television as Queen Elizabeth I and Susan B. Anthony. She received acclaim for her portrayal of Emily Dickinson. \n“I find ecstasy in living\,” she assures us. And when she says her humble home is her paradise\, we believe her. When she passes me on her way out of the theater\, gently taking my hand\, I am certain she is the poet herself. You can’t ask for more. – Tom Cohen (from: On the Town) \nphoto credit Edward Herbst \nTickets for events at the Sandisfield Arts Center are available online or may be purchased at the door on the night of the performance on a first come-first served basis. ONLINE TICKETS ARE RECOMMENDED TO INSURE A SEAT. \nChildren 12 and under are admitted FREE\, unless otherwise noted\, when space allows.

SUMMARY:A SANDISFIELD FORUM ON HISTORY AND AMERICAN CULTURE - AMERICAN CULTURE & WARTIME PROPOGANDA
DESCRIPTION:Bill Cohn\, Trinity College Visiting Professor of History and American Studies\, will mark the 100th anniversary of The Great War 1914-1918 (World War I) and the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II (1945) with a discussion of the propaganda techniques used in each war that regimented the public mind. \nDuring World War I posters\, magazines\, government and private organizations played a significant role in mobilizing the nation to enlist in the war effort and to support President Wilson’s goal of making the world safe for democracy.  “Americanization” in the face of “the enemy within” became a major rallying cry.  Fear of so-called “hyphenated” Americans escalated even before the United States entered the war in 1917. \nFor Americans the fight against evil totalitarianism until unconditional surrender was the theme of World War II and the primary explanation of the war’s cause.  Most Americans\, at least for the duration\, patriotically put aside their individual desires and pitched in for the common cause.    The patriotism that united the nation during wartime continued to be a prominent cultural factor in the decades that followed because of the importance of patriotism’s link to the American Way of Life.

SUMMARY:Gallery of Artists Works in Clay created by June Wink & Photos by Geoffrey Coelho
DESCRIPTION:Works in Clay created by June Wink & Photos by Geoffrey Coelho\nOpening Reception : 2nd May 2015 02:00 PM\nDate of Show : 2nd May 2015 – 30th Nov -0001 \nGeoffrey Coelho is a Berkshire County photographer whose work has been featured in the Berkshire Record\, Sandisfield Times and Otis Gazette. He has exhibited at the Knox Gallery in Monterey and the Sohn Fine Art Gallery in Stockbridge (now in Lenox). \nHis photographic interests include rural landscapes\, small town streetscapes\, architectural interiors and exteriors and abandoned buildings and waste places. He can often be found climbing over fences in places where he probably shouldn’t be. Lately\, he has been experimenting with photographic still life using a technique called “painting with light”. \nJune Wink describes her Journey with Clay:   “From as early as I can remember\, color and form have intrigued me.  As a child sitting high up in my tree house\, I would pour colored water (made from my crepe paper collection) into my wide variety of bottles\, all shapes and sizes.  At the same time\, I watched as my mother baked our bread and I began to play with dough\, shaping it into different forms and watching as it turned into puffy and unrecognizable balls.  That’s how I became accustomed to messy hands and the idea of becoming a potter grabbed me!”
