SUMMARY:Gallery of Artists Tina Castiblanco
DESCRIPTION:In the Gallery: July 1 – 29\, Tina Castiblanco\n\nOpening Reception : 1st Jul 2017 02:00 PM\nDate of Show : 1st Jul 2017 – 29th Jul 2017 \n\n\nARTIST’S STATEMENT \n“My experiences visiting and living in different countries have contributed to how my observations and memory of the local landscapes\, architecture and cultural encounters have entered into my artwork. I feel a constant\, yet non-conflicting dichotomy within myself\, and my art of the universal and the local. In this dichotomy I see the cultural\, iconographic\, geographic commonalities in the world; while still understanding the intrinsic uniqueness that exists within a place that enables a distinct ethnic and aesthetic experience.

SUMMARY:Over There—the Great War to End All Wars A Hundred Years Ago 1917-1918
DESCRIPTION:Bill Cohn\, Trinity College Visiting Professor of History and American Studies\, continues his analysis of the impact of the “war to end all wars” through the letters of his father from the battlefield\, and his mother’s journals on the home front. Bill’s father to be\, a buck private in the 308th Ohio Combat Engineers in World War I\, participated in the three major U.S. offensives in 1918 as a loyal American patriot who was committed to the successful outcome of the war and the cause for which he was fighting. He recorded all of his movements during his time in France and Germany in his diary and his hopes about the war’s outcome and what he went through in his many letters to his sweetheart\, Bill’s mother to be at home in Ohio. Excerpts from those many letters will convey to you something of the nature of that war as his father reported it. Bill’s mother’s anxious and worried thoughts about her sweetheart and the war over there are recorded daily in her own diary about the war over here.

SUMMARY:UNDER MILK WOOD By Dylan Thomas\, performed by the Sandisfield Players
DESCRIPTION:Three years ago the Players performed Dylan Thomas’ great 20th century play “Under Milk Wood” and we feel it’s time once again to venture into the small Welsh fishing village of Llareggub and join its cast of eccentric inhabitants for an evening of humor—often quite surreal— and astonishing poetry. The play begins at night and our narrators guide us through the dream worlds of village inhabitants. Then on through the waking spring day of their often extraordinary antics until dusk\, and night once more descends. It is a wonderful play of dazzling poetic language\, love for his 60 or so characters and full of wit and fun. \nUnder Milk Wood also performed by the Sandisfield Players on May 20 at 7:00 PM at the Unicorn Theater in Stockbridge\, and on May 21 at 4:00 PM at the Norfolk Library. For information about these performances\, please contact these venues directly. Unicorn Theatre: tel 413 997-4444 berkshiretheatregroup.org Norfolk Library: tel: 860 542-5075 norfolklibrary.org \nThe Sandisfield Players are sponsored for the 2017 season by Brockman Real Estate\, Chapin Fish\, Broker – Owner. \n\n\nTickets for events at the Sandisfield Arts Center are available online or may be purchased at the door on the night of the performance on a first come-first served basis. SUMMARY:Film & Lecture: Robert Bielsky presents legendary WWII partisans\, the Bielski Brothers in the 2006 documentary\, “Jerusalem in the Woods”

Mr. Bielsky lectures throughout the world about the exploits of his father and his uncles. He is a board member of the Museum of Jewish Heritage and a past President of the Holocaust Memorial Committee of Brooklyn. He is also the President and founder of Manhattan Commercial Realty Corp. in New York City. \nSuggested donation $20.

SUMMARY:Gallery of Artists Sybil Perry
DESCRIPTION:In the Gallery: June 3 – 30\, Sybil Perry\n\nOpening Reception : 3rd Jun 2017 02:00 PM\nDate of Show : 3rd Jun 2017 – 30th Jun 2017 \n\n\nARTIST’S STATEMENT \n“I am inspired by landscapes that make me catch my breath. My paintings are not just a product of what I see. They are what I see transformed by my imagination and memories. They may at times have a story hidden in them. Sometimes I recognize the story as I am working on the piece. It is the beauty and sacredness of the earth captured on an emotional level. Water\, mist and mountains continually intrigue me—the mountains of the Berkshires\, the Hudson Valley\, Lake George and Kyoto.” “Color is what drives me and delights me. My process is meditative. Experimenting with layers of many colors enables me to explore\, to play\, and to experience wonder. These pastel paintings\, inspired by images gathered out-of-doors\, are completed in my studio. It most pleases me to create intuitively something I had not quite expected. I find the process to be a spiritual journey\, a mystery. At the heart of it all is discovery.”

SUMMARY:“Crazy World” Linda Mironti in a Cabaret Performance
DESCRIPTION:We live in a crazy world and in an election year\, things seem crazier than ever\, politics for sure\, and sometimes even love and relationships.  Since we can’t leave this crazy world\, let Linda entertain you with stories and song. “A middle-age belter with a sassy smile and one of those penetrating and lyric voices that reach out and snuggle an audience\, the lady owned us with twelve songs bumped with the story of her life.” Val Coleman\, Sandisfield Times \nLinda’s first voice teacher was her Grandmother Angelina\, who taught her Italian folk songs while showing her how to make homemade gnocchi and pasta. Ironically\, for the 7 years she performed in Italy she sang mostly blues\, jazz\, rhythm and blues\, and original pop material; she wrote lyrics for herself and for many other artists. \nIt wasn’t until her return to New York City in the mid 90’s that she was able to include her favorite Italian songs in her performances.   Linda has been organizing creative workshops in the arts in Italy for the past 20 years\, and singing anywhere she happens to be\, including here in her new home in Sandisfield. \nTickets for events at the Sandisfield Arts Center are available online or may be purchased at the door on the night of the performance on a first come-first served basis. ONLINE TICKETS ARE RECOMMENDED TO INSURE A SEAT. \nChildren 12 and under are admitted FREE\, unless otherwise noted\, when space allows.

SUMMARY:Gallery of Artists In the Gallery: October 9- 30 Robin Crofut-Brittingham
DESCRIPTION:Robin Crofut-Brittingham\n\nOpening Reception : 9th Oct 2016 02:00 PM\nDate of Show : 9th Oct 2016 – 30th Oct 2016 \n\n\nFrom the artist \nI have developed a visual taxonomy where disparate imagined characters come together to generate a narrative.  Drawing inspiration from myths\, fairy tales\, and my own personal history\,  I explore this convergence of truth and fantasy. At this intersection\, reality can become absurd\, illogical\, and humorous.  The characters in my paintings tend to exist in various paradises.  Within these landscapes I investigate the tension between the natural world as a reality in need of preservation and nature as a voluptuous imagined garden of delight where fantasy unfolds and abundance is taken for granted.

SUMMARY:The Art of Translation with Patty Crane A Reading and Discussion of "Bright Scythe: Selected Poems by Tomas Transtromer
DESCRIPTION:Introduced by Sandisfield poet Hannah Fries\, Patty Crane reads from and discusses Bright Scythe\, her acclaimed translation of the poetry of Nobel Prize winner Tomas Tranströmer. In addition to reading from the book\, Crane will talk with Fries about Tranströmer’s life and work\, Crane’s relationship with the Tranströmers during her time living in Sweden\, and her translation process. Reviewing this handsome bilingual edition in the New York Times Book Review\, Craig Morgan Teicher wrote\, “To my ear\, Crane has so far made the best English version of Transtromer because of these small choices. She actually worked with the poet and his wife\, as she describes in a moving afterword; perhaps that has much to do with her sensitivity.” \n  \nPoet and translator Patty Crane lives in the Berkshires. Her award-winning poetry has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies\, and her translations of Tomas Tranströmer’s poetry have appeared in American Poetry Review\, Blackbird\, New Ohio Review\, Poetry Daily\, Poetry East\, and Smartish Pace. She spent three years living in the Stockholm area of Sweden\, where she worked closely with Tranströmer and his wife\, Monica. \nA reception and book signing will follow. \nTickets for events at the Sandisfield Arts Center are available online or may be purchased at the door on the night of the performance on a first come-first served basis. SUMMARY:Gallery of Artists Michelle Arnot
DESCRIPTION:In the Gallery Sept 3-25: Shodou: Traveling Along the Long Path of Writing Japanese Calligraphy\nOpening Reception : 3rd Sep 2016 02:00 PM\nDate of Show : 3rd Sep 2016 – 26th Sep 2016 \nThe opening reception for the exhibit is Saturday\, Sept 3 from 2-4PM \nThe ancient art of Japanese calligraphy (shodou) originated from Chinese characters (kanji) and incorporates the Japanese syllabary (hiragana). It is a form of meditation that requires ‘the four treasures’ –a brush\, ink\, inkstone and paper. While living in Tokyo with her family\, long time Sandisfield home owner Michelle Arnot began her study of the art form. Three years ago she enrolled in Nihon Shuji\, the Japanese Calligraphy Society with overseas chapters\, under the tutelage of Seikou Sensei.  Members of the school receive monthly assignments that are sent to Tokyo for grading using the martial arts ‘dojo’ system. In 2016 Arnot achieved the first ‘dan’ (master) level of eight in kanji and invites her neighbors to witness the many steps she has taken along her long climb. \nGallery hours are 2-5 on Saturdays\, 1-4 on Sundays\, and by appointment with the artist.
