SUMMARY:Chris Brubeck and Triple Play!
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand\, kicking off our fall season — Chris Brubeck and Triple Play on our main stage! Triple Play has something for everyone with their crossover music blending jazz with blues and folk music. \n \nAbout Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play (from their website) \nTriple Play is the name given to three outstanding and versatile musicians\, Peter Madcat Ruth (on harmonica\, guitar\, jaw harp\, percussion & vocals)\, Joel Brown\, (folk and classical acoustic guitar and vocals) and Chris Brubeck (electric bass\, bass trombone\, piano & vocals).  Collectively they bring a rare level of joy\, virtuosity\, and American spirit to the folk\, blues\, jazz and classical music they perform. Triple Play’s musical roots go way back (nearly 40 years!) in each member’s history. Chris and Madcat have toured and recorded together in different settings since 1969\, first as young rock musicians in the group “New Heavenly Blue” (with albums on RCA and Atlantic Records)\, “Sky King”(on Columbia)\, and then as jazz musicians touring the world with Dave Brubeck. \nChris went on to form the group Crofut & Brubeck with the uniquely talented banjo player  Bill Crofut and also featured Joel on guitar.  A highly unusual and critically acclaimed CD\, “Across Your Dreams” (Telarc) featuring famous mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade singing  songs written by Chris\, Dave & Iola Brubeck.  Their next project was the recording of the acclaimed “Bach to Brubeck” (Koch International Classics) at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra. \nSadly\, Bill Crofut passed away in 1999\, and Madcat joined Chris and Joel to form the group Triple Play.    Their live performance is documented on their first cd\, “Triple Play Live”\, recorded at one of their college concerts.  In reviewing this disc\, All Music Guide wrote:  “This boundary stretching CD should be investigated by anyone who enjoys great American music.” \nTheir second CD\, “Watching the World” was recorded in studios across the country and according to All Music Guide:  “It’s great to hear a group that combines top-notch musicianship\, potent originals\, and a touch of humor\, this CD is truly a Triple Play in any fan’s score book.” \nWith an ever-expanding repertoire\, the Trio continues to play in concert halls\, clubs and festivals all over the country\, including performing many of Chris’ symphonic arrangements with orchestras across the U.S.   Recently  they played a set at the Monterey Jazz Festival and later that evening were featured in the premiere of Dave Brubeck’s Cannery Row Suite.    Paul deBarros\, writer for the Seattle Times and Downbeat\, commented:  “Triple Play is what jazz always was and always should be about:  good-time rhythm\, unbridled joy and the sweet release but bittersweet aftertaste of the blues.  If there’s a better old-time blues and jazz harmonica player out there than Madcat Ruth\, I’d sure love to know where he lives.” \nAt this time\, masks optional but recommended. We’re doing social distancing\, so we’re limiting attendance to 60% capacity.

SUMMARY:Selections from The Well-Tempered Clavier & Other Keyboard Works by Bach
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to present the well-known Bach disciple\, Andrew P. Sheranian\, founding director of The Bach Project at Ashmont Hill Chamber Music\, bringing Bach to our stage and Steinway! \nAndrew P. Sheranian\, a Boston-based pianist/organist and conductor\, will perform keyboard works of Johann Sebastian Bach\, including a selection of preludes and fugues from the WellTempered Clavier. The Well-Tempered Clavier (Das Wohltemperierte Klavier) is a collection of keyboard music that Bach wrote in the 1720’s\, utilizing every possible major and minor key: 12 preludes and fugues for the major keys\, and 12 preludes and fugues for the minor keys\, for a total of 24. But\, Bach being Bach\, he did it twice\, publishing two books with unique compositions in each key: an astonishing feat! Mr. Sheranian will perform some of the most outstanding examples from the WTC as well as some miscellaneous pieces to round out the program. See Program details below. \nAbout Andrew Sheranian \nSince 2010\, Andrew Sheranian has been Organist and Master of Choristers at the Parish of All Saints\, Ashmont in Boston\, an Anglo-Catholic church known for its commitment to excellence in liturgy and music. His duties at Ashmont include recruiting\, training\, and conducting the Choir of Men and Boys\, as well as playing the parish’s two pipe organs: C.B. Fisk Opus 103 of 1995 and Skinner Opus 708 of 1929\, the latter installed in 2015 during Mr. Sheranian’s tenure. \nPrior to taking up the post at Ashmont\, Andrew Sheranian served as Organist and Choirmaster at Christ’s Church in Rye\, New York for seven years. In 2003\, Mr. Sheranian completed his Master of Music degree through the Institute of Sacred Music at Yale University\, as a student of Martin Jean. His undergraduate training took place at New England Conservatory of Music\, under the tutelage of William Porter\, where he received his Bachelor of Music degree. \nA lifelong disciple of Johann Sebastian Bach\, Mr. Sheranian is the founding director of The Bach Project at Ashmont Hill Chamber Music\, a baroque ensemble of instrumentalists and singers aiming to perform the full spectrum of Bach’s music in performances at All Saints’ Ashmont. To arrange an appointment please contact Adam Manacher @ 617-645-6525. \nWinners: \nJulia Rose Miner:\n\n\nFormed A New\n2020\nAcrylic Paint\, Faux Fur\, and Joint Compound on Board\n36”x24”\n\nStatement:\nHi\, my name is Julia Rose Miner. I am a painter who lives and works in the small\, artistic town of Stockbridge\, MA. In my most recent collection\, my textural paintings of abstracted landscapes explore the ideas of innocence and decay. I use a pallet that consists of candy\, stuffed animal materials\, and vibrant pastel colors. These works play with the corrosion of nostalgia while holding onto a childlike optimism. At the age of seven I was diagnosed with a visual impairment\, called Stargardt Disease\, leaving my world altered with a constant vibrating visual texture. I use the sense of touch as a source of sight to navigate through life and art. This is  how I experience the world and I feel compelled to use these tools when making my work. In my practice I translate bits and pieces of visual information to fabricate a new reality that lies in the comfort of unease. I welcome and encourage both delight and putrefaction to coexist. Building layers I construct and paint distorted and discolored imagery inspired by my everyday surroundings. My work embraces the ideas of joy and deterioration while abstracting the world.\n\nNatasha Wein:\n \n\nSpaces: Suburbs\n 2022\nAcrylic paint\, gouache\, and water-soluble ink pencils on paper\n24×18 inches\n\nStatement:\n“Spaces” explores the interface between external and internal experience\, specifically how we hold the spaces and relationships we inhabit in our minds as memory. The mental landscapes we foster and the narratives we tell ourselves about those landscapes inform our sense of belonging and resilience. In this series\, I used my longing for contentment amidst a particularly distressing and uprooted period in my life to influence my use of color and shape; by painting with intention\, I created an external space with movement and possibility from where I could work with my internal distress and\, in turn\, repaint my psychic wallpaper. When we strip back the cognitive clutter\, a more honest rendering of our experiences and desires can be exposed\, and one that is often more sincere and playful. This way of working can decongest complicated and backlogged feelings so they can be integrated into our present experience. I used tape as a tool to create territories of paint and water-soluble ink pencils to make lines connecting territories of color. We often think of boundaries as points of separation\, but they are more meeting points that allow for a relationship to occur. This was a process of experiential learning through process—a practice in clearing spaces and rendering passages to navigate memories\, circumstance\, and dreams.\n\nAlorah Welti:\n \n\nEve Adam Lilith (Red White Blue) \n2022\nPaint and decoupage on plastic skeletons\napproximately 20×20 inches\n\nStatement:\nMy work\, primarily in mixed media\, paper\, and fiber\, asks and seeks to answer the question of what is sacred. As someone with synesthesia\, a sensory neurodivergence that connects senses like sound and color\, I am eternally searching for the visceral and dreamlike. Texture\, saturation\, and reclamation are fundamental to my practice\, as are myth and feminist spirituality. I am endlessly inspired by fertility\, ancestry\, and the constant presence of history in all things.

DESCRIPTION:We are proud to announce the talented winners of the 2022 Daniel Manacher Young Artists Award\, an award in honor of the late Daniel Manacher and funded through generous donations in his name. Join us for the opening reeption and awards presentation Saturday August 13 2 -4 PM.  The show runs through September 7 by appointment (gallery@sandisfieldartscenter.org) or when the Arts Center is open for an event. This is the first year of the award competition. \nFeatured image is Daniel Manacher\, Shwoopy Loops\, 2013\, and Daniel’s Camaro in the Petersen Automative Museum in Los Angeles.  \nDaniel Manacher’s parents\, Carol Birnbaum and Adam Manacher\, have described the intent of the prize: \n“With this prize\, we hope to carry forward values that were important to Daniel.  We are happy that the judges have found young artists who tenaciously pursue their vision\, seek to make ordinary objects extraordinary\, and bring community into conversation.” \nJudges this year were Jess Cofrin\, artist and Gallery chair at the Sandisfield Arts Center\, Susie Crofut\, artist\, and Arts Center Board member\, and Jessie Young\, a teacher of Daniel’s who has a specialty in digital art and works a lot with young artists. \nFrom the judges: “The selection committee was very pleased with the caliber of artists who applied for the prize. The three winners were chosen because they all have a clear artistic voice that comes through their chosen media. The work they applied with was consistent\, cohesive\, and showed a deep understanding of the materials.” \nAbout the prize \nWinners: \nJulia Rose Miner:\n\n\nFormed A New\n2020\nAcrylic Paint\, Faux Fur\, and Joint Compound on Board\n36”x24”\n\nStatement:\nHi\, my name is Julia Rose Miner. I am a painter who lives and works in the small\, artistic town of Stockbridge\, MA. In my most recent collection\, my textural paintings of abstracted landscapes explore the ideas of innocence and decay. I use a pallet that consists of candy\, stuffed animal materials\, and vibrant pastel colors. These works play with the corrosion of nostalgia while holding onto a childlike optimism. At the age of seven I was diagnosed with a visual impairment\, called Stargardt Disease\, leaving my world altered with a constant vibrating visual texture. I use the sense of touch as a source of sight to navigate through life and art. This is  how I experience the world and I feel compelled to use these tools when making my work. In my practice I translate bits and pieces of visual information to fabricate a new reality that lies in the comfort of unease. I welcome and encourage both delight and putrefaction to coexist. Building layers I construct and paint distorted and discolored imagery inspired by my everyday surroundings. My work embraces the ideas of joy and deterioration while abstracting the world.\n\nNatasha Wein:\n \n\nSpaces: Suburbs\n 2022\nAcrylic paint\, gouache\, and water-soluble ink pencils on paper\n24×18 inches\n\nStatement:\n“Spaces” explores the interface between external and internal experience\, specifically how we hold the spaces and relationships we inhabit in our minds as memory. The mental landscapes we foster and the narratives we tell ourselves about those landscapes inform our sense of belonging and resilience. In this series\, I used my longing for contentment amidst a particularly distressing and uprooted period in my life to influence my use of color and shape; by painting with intention\, I created an external space with movement and possibility from where I could work with my internal distress and\, in turn\, repaint my psychic wallpaper. When we strip back the cognitive clutter\, a more honest rendering of our experiences and desires can be exposed\, and one that is often more sincere and playful. This way of working can decongest complicated and backlogged feelings so they can be integrated into our present experience. I used tape as a tool to create territories of paint and water-soluble ink pencils to make lines connecting territories of color. We often think of boundaries as points of separation\, but they are more meeting points that allow for a relationship to occur. This was a process of experiential learning through process—a practice in clearing spaces and rendering passages to navigate memories\, circumstance\, and dreams.\n\nAlorah Welti:\n \n\nEve Adam Lilith (Red White Blue) \n2022\nPaint and decoupage on plastic skeletons\napproximately 20×20 inches\n\nStatement:\nMy work\, primarily in mixed media\, paper\, and fiber\, asks and seeks to answer the question of what is sacred. As someone with synesthesia\, a sensory neurodivergence that connects senses like sound and color\, I am eternally searching for the visceral and dreamlike. Texture\, saturation\, and reclamation are fundamental to my practice\, as are myth and feminist spirituality. I am endlessly inspired by fertility\, ancestry\, and the constant presence of history in all things.

DESCRIPTION:Enoch Arden is an epic poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson set to music for piano and speaker by the great late Romantic German composer Rickard Strauss. \nPerformed by Ben Luxon and at the piano\, Josh Luxon. \nThis is a rare opportunity to see and hear this moving and unique work combining poetry and music performed by the world-renowned Ben Luxon and his grandson\, Josh Luxon. \nFrom Wikipedia: \nRichard Strauss wrote Enoch Arden for the actor Ernst von Possart\, who in 1896 had assisted him in obtaining the post of Chief Conductor at the Bavarian State Opera. He wrote it while engaged in composing Don Quixote and finished it in February 1897. Strauss and Possart toured together widely with the melodrama\, in a German translation by Adolf Strodtmann. \nThe painting above is by George Goodwin Kilburne and is in the public domain.

We send our love to Cornelius and hope to have him and his trio\, Lisa Liu and Charlie Rauh\, present in the future. \nHappily\, poet and Cave Canem Fellow Kate Rushin will read a few of Cornelius’s poems as well as her own\, and talk a bit about Cornelius and Cave Canem\, the press he and Toi Derricotte founded. \nMASKS REQUIRED. \nOn Sunday\, July 17 at 2 PM\, we join with Voices of Poetry for an extraordinary afternoon of poetry and conversation. To bring in the widest possible audience\, from high school student writers to senior citizens\, we’re pleased to present this event free (donations welcome). \nBenjamin Luxon will set the stage with a few words about the long tradition of poetry\, and poetry and music\, at the Sandisfield Arts Center. \nThe afternoon features award winning poets Doug Anderson and Molly Peacock. \nMolly Peacock\nMolly Peacock is an acclaimed poet\, biographer\, essayist\, and writer of tales whose multi-genre literary life has taken her from New York City to Toronto\, from poetry to prose\, from words to words-and-pictures\, and from lyric self-examination to curiosity about the lives of others. “Peacock has many talents\, not the least of which is her voice\, characterized by engaging honesty and self-deprecating humor. She comes across as that fellow passenger on an airplane to whom you have suddenly and quite naturally confessed your story (and learned hers)” (Lorna Blake in The Hudson Review). Molly’s biography of painter Mary Hiester Reid\, Flower Diary\, was a Quill and Quire Best Book of 2021. More about Molly. \n  \nDoug Anderson has taught at various colleges and universities\, and two MFA programs. He has published several books – of poetry & memoir – including The Moon Reflected Fire (Alice James Books\, 1994)\, which won the Kate Tufts Discovery Award; Blues for Unemployed Secret Police (Curbstone Books\, 2000)\, which received a grant from the Eric Mathieu King Fund of the Academy of American Poets; Keep Your Head Down: Vietnam\, the Sixties\, and a Journey of Self-\nDiscovery (W. W. Norton & Co.\, 2009); and Horse Medicine (Barrow Street Press\, 2015). His most recent poetry collection – Undress\, She Said – is forthcoming from Four Way Books in September 2022. His work has appeared in many literary journals\, including Asheville Poetry Review\, Field\, Nine Mile\, Ploughshares\, Poetry\, Southern Review\, Massachusetts Review\, and Virginia Quarterly Review. \nThe first half of the program will include poets Hilde Weisert\, Neil Silberblatt\, and Kate Rushin. \n \nHilde WeisertAward-winning poets Hilde Weisert\, president of the Sandisfield Arts Center\, and Neil Silberblatt\, founder of Voices of Poetry\, will introduce the afternoon with short readings from their own work. \nOf Weisert’s 2015 collection The Scheme of Things\, Ursula Le Guin wrote “Hilde Weisert’s quiet\, versatile poetic voice\, fully at ease in narrative and lyric\, is distinguished by vivid accuracy of thought and speech\, modest but absolute courage in choice of subject\, a dry\, sweet humor\, and a generosity of spirit that brings me back to her book again and again.” \nNeil Silberblatt\nNeil Silberblatt has published two poetry collections: So Far\, So Good (2012)\, and Present Tense (2013)\, and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize.  His most recent poetry book\, Past Imperfect (Nixes Mate Books\, 2018)\, was nominated for the Mass. Book Award in Poetry. Neil is the founding director of Voices of Poetry which has organized and presented a series of (more than 400) poetry events\, featuring acclaimed poets at various venues in NY\, NJ\, CT and MA\, including The Mount / Edith Wharton’s home in Lenox\, MA\, and The Rubin Museum of Art in NYC. We’re delighted to have him add the Sandisfield Arts Center to that list. \nKate Rushin  is the author of The Black Back-Ups and “The Bridge Poem.” Her work is widely anthologized and is included in Poetry Magazine with the Witness Stones Old Lyme poetry project and in the anthology\, African American Poetry: 250 Years of Struggle and Song\, edited by Kevin Young. She has received fellowships from The Massachusetts Artists Foundation\, The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and the Cave Canem Foundation. Kate is currently Professor of English and Poet in Residence at Connecticut College in New London\, CT. \nThe afternoon will be capped off with conversation with the poets about poetry and the writing life and a book signing reception. \nThe event is free\, but space will be limited. SUMMARY:The Green Box – Book and Film Preview with Jim Kurtz
DESCRIPTION:Jim Kurtz will read from his book The Green Box\, with an accompanying slide show. The Green Box is the gripping story of an ordinary man called to war — a story rediscovered by a son through a handful of telegrams\, letters\, and other clues. Jim Kurtz’s persistent efforts to search the archives\, the memories of other airmen in WWII\, and the European sites where his father fought and was imprisoned are captivating. He shows us how his father answered the call to duty\, carried out bombing missions in service to his country\, and suffered the inhumane conditions of a German POW camp and the lasting effects we today call PTSD. \nAudience members will also get a preview of the documentary film in development and a talk and Q&A with the producer. There will be a book signing afterward.

DESCRIPTION:Postponed to next month\, double feature \nIt’s Friday night at the movies at the Arts Center.  Riley and Bogart Muller are showing the original Star Wars\, and providing juice boxes and popcorn for family fun! \nFirst entry Lucas’s Star Wars trilogy proved to be one of the biggest box-office hits of all time. A young hero\, a captured princess\, a hot-shot pilot\, cute robots\, a vile villain\, and a heroic and mysterious Jedi knight blend together with marvelous special effects in a fantasy tale about rebel forces engaged in a life or death struggle with the tyrant leaders of the Galactic Empire. Set a new cinematic standard for realistic special effects\, making many pre-Star Wars effects seem almost laughable in retrospect. Followed by The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983).

SUMMARY:Roger Street Friedman Concert\, Folk Duo Ari and Mia Opening
DESCRIPTION:Please note: Masks required! \nRoger Street Friedman is an award-winning singer-songwriter based in Sea Cliff\, NY. His critically acclaimed 2017 album Shoot The Moon reached #2 on the Roots Music Report Americana Country Album Chart. \nRecalling the pop-rock singer-songwriter tradition of Jackson Browne\, Marc Cohn\, Randy Newman\, Colin Hay\, Bruce Hornsby\, and Mark Knopfler\, Friedman released “Sun Never Sets” in 2019 – a song and video dedicated to immigrants and immigration reform.  Collaborating on the project were Peter Yarrow\, Tom Chapin\, Joel Rafael and Guy Davis.  His third-full length album\, RISE\, produced by Larry Campbell was released in 2020 followed by his most recent EP\, COME WHAT MAY in July 2021. \nRoger performed for us last year at a great outdoor community event and we’re thrilled to bring him back\, along with the chamber-folk duo of Ari and Mia opening\, for a concert at the Arts Center. \nMore about Roger: \nRoger Street Friedman was bitten by the music bug early\, learning to write songs(at the age of 12) and developing his studio engineering skills. His life took a left turn in his early 20’s and he left music for a career in his family’s retail display business for about 25 years. But a combination of events during the mid-’00s — the passing of his father and mother\, marriage and\, later\, the births of his two children — steered Friedman back to music\, leading to the acclaimed 2014 debut THE WAITING SKY and 2017’s SHOOT THE MOON. “Those life events really kind of opened the floodgates for me to start writing again\,” he notes. \nRoger has performed at the Clearwater Folk Festival\, Huntington Folk Festival and The Falcon Ridge Folk Festival (Grassy Hill Emerging Artist) as well as touring up and down the Northeast\, Mid-Atlantic and South.  Friedman performed at the 2019 NERFA conference in a coveted “formal” showcase.

DESCRIPTION:The Sandisfield Arts Center is pleased to announce the Daniel Manacher Prize for Young Artists\, submission deadline June 15\, 2022.\nNow extended to June 22! \nThree artists will be selected as finalists and each will receive $350 in support of their art practice\, as well as a group show of their work at the Sandisfield Arts Center in August\, 2022. The prize was generously created by Adam Manacher and Carol Birnbaum\, the parents of Daniel Manacher in memory of their son and his passion for art. Direct any questions to gallery@sandisfieldartscenter.org  \nEligibility and Application Requirements \nEntry Deadline: June 22\, 2022 at midnight \nApplicants will be notified no later than July 15\, 2022 via email \nExhibition dates: August 13-Sept 7\, 2022 with an opening reception on August 13 2-4 pm that will include refreshments. \nWork must be dropped off at the Sandisfield Arts Center for installation on August 10th or 11th. \nWork must be picked up Sept 7\, 2022. \nEntry Requirements: Eligible artists are those 17-26 yrs of age living or attending school in Berkshire County. There is no fee associated with the application and all entrants will be judged based solely on the merit of the work presented.  We are asking that you provide us with the contact information for one reference. This should be a person who is familiar with your art practice. \nAccepted Media: We are currently accepting applications from those working in painting\, drawing\, mixed media\, sculpture\, digital paintings\, and digital drawings. We are unable to accept video\, photography\, or sound art at this time. Digital work must be able to be printed for display on a wall to be considered. \nWork Size: No piece can exceed 60 inches in any direction\, and sculptures must be under 60 lbs. Artists are responsible for all transportation of the work. All artwork must have been created in the past 3 years. She’s traveled to more than seventy countries\, won numerous song-writing accolades\, toured with the Indigo Girls and Judy Collins\, and written two musicals. She is an environmental activist and works toward empowering LGBTQ youth. DESCRIPTION:What is natural wine?  Natural wine is unfiltered\, untamed and un-photoshopped wine made in the vineyard rather than the winery.  John L. Grammer\, partner in the wine import company Skin Contact Wines\, will guide you through a wine tasting of natural wines.  Treat your palate to a riot of flavors. \nGrowing up in New York City\, John Lawrence Grammer spent his Saturdays biking through Chinatown in search of delicious food and new experiences. After graduating from Harvard\, he hit the streets to learn about wine and food. Tasting a bottle of Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2001 with a generous client sealed the deal. John completed the WSET Level 4 Diploma in the Wine and Spirits program and has begun studying for the Master of Wine entrance exam. \nFresh glasses will be used for each pour.  The hors d’oeuvre table will be monitored to ensure safe food practices and social distancing will be observed. \nThis is how John and his partner Ricardo Castiblanco describe what makes their wines special: “Skin Contact Wines imports wines from organically farmed vineyards.  We believe the best wines come from grapes that are farmed attentively.  Organic viticulture represents a return to the basic tenets of farming and a respect for natural processes. Some of our producers choose to go beyond organic principles and utilize biodynamic practices to further promote a healthy microbiome on their properties.
