SUMMARY:My Life in the Most Amazing Scientific Program You've Never Heard of: 50 Years of Scientific Ocean Drilling
DESCRIPTION:FREE online illustrated lecture by Wesleyan Professor Suzanne OConnell. \nProject MOHO\, an ill-conceived plan of the early 1960’s to drill through the Earth’s crust\, did not turn out well. But it did have the beneficial effect of spurring the development of  scientific ocean drilling. Although a rose by any name might be as sweet\, the multiple names (DSDP\, ODP\, IODP) associated with scientific ocean drilling over the years have unfortunately lessened public awareness of this remarkable international scientific endeavor. \nWhatever you call this program\, it has an impressive record of achievement: scientific ocean drilling helped to prove plate tectonics\, developed the discipline of paleoceannography\, and has recovered life in the deepest recesses of Earth’s ocean crust. Learn about its origins\, contributions to understanding Earth’s history and its future plans. \nSuzanne OConnell has been involved in scientific ocean drilling since the mid-1970’s and has spent 16 months at sea on its ships exploring Earth’s history as recorded in ocean floor sediments. \nDr. OConnell is a professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Wesleyan University and researches paleoclimate. She is the recipient of the Association for Women Geoscientists Outstanding Educator Award\, and author/co-author of over 100 refereed science publications\, primarily focused on paleoclimate research and gender equality. \nLast minute attendees? SUMMARY:Gallery Opening\, Reception and Show: Peter Hason Photography - Free
DESCRIPTION:Support our artists! Follow Peter on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/phasonation/ \nThe outdoor opening and reception is from 4 to 6 PM  on June 5 (rain date June 6).  The exhibit will be on view weekends or by request to gallery@sandisfieldartscenter.org through July 4. \nPhotography by Peter Hason \nArtist’s Statement: “My photographs are typically taken from low angles so the perspective is that of looking up\, which lends an air of reverence and veneration to the subject matter. As Oscar Wilde said\, ‘We are all in the gutter\, but some of us are looking at the stars.’ My work in this exhibit focuses on the highly organized and intricate parallel and juxtaposing lines that emerge in the cityscape when the chaotic rhythm of city life is momentarily muted.” \nAs a native New Yorker who spent his youth plugged into the street culture of the ’80s and ’90s\, Peter Hason’s photography reflects his life-long personal relationship with the landscape\, architecture\, and people of the city as he captures the quiet but breathtaking beauty in the ordinary and everyday. \nThis show\, delayed from 2020\, is dedicated to the memory of longtime Sandisfield Arts Center volunteer and Gallery committee member Jane Hason. The opening reception will be outdoors and the Gallery show will be open to small groups for safe social distancing. \n
